Yes, there are standard rules to avoid placing your furniture in the way of being able to navigate through a room - these are:
- Create a clearance of 36" around doors. This allows clearance for the swing of the door and easy entering and exiting.
- Leave 12" of space in front of windows...allowing easy access to open or close them. Nothing worse then a window you can't get to on a hot day.
- Traveling between furniture the ideal is 18" wide. This measurement has proven to be the most comfortable width for people traffic within a standard room.
- It is never a good idea to place furniture in front of a mantle.
