Let's tackle the TV area first.  Begin by removing everything out of the entertainment unit  with the exclusion of that heavy TV.  Dust and clean thoroughly.  Whatever you return to store in your unit must only relate to the TV.

Try to Organize your cords and tie them together with a zip tie or a hide cord product which can be found at your local Target, Circuit City etc.  The designer rule for your DVD's and Videos is - have them close but out of sight.

Keep your remote controls together - some sort of basket or box works nicely.  How much time do you spend looking for the remote?

Next we have the Coffee Table.  This important piece of furniture often acts as a foot rest, buffet table and magazine rack.  It has a special propensity to be the biggest clutter collector in the room.

By applying our 15 minutes a day guideline, sweep by this handy little table every evening and  toss the goodies found into a basket to be returned to their rightful place.  Try not to hoard magazines, they pile up fast.
Limit your collection to 4 months and move the rest to the recycle bin.

Finally, the Fire Place - Specifically - the mantle.  Family photos and mementoes often clutter up this space.  A Cluttered mantle is one of the most unattractive facets to any room...causing the entire room to look messy.

Limit your mantle to 3 or 5 items that share a common theme.  It is also nice to tie in whatever you have placed on the mantle with the color scheme you have created in the room.

Though some modern homes are being built with the luxury of having  designated media room and/or den our focus  on this page is on the room where everyone likes to "hang out".
Usually these "living" rooms have 3 main features

  • Coffee Table
  • Fireplace
Each one has their associated clutter catchers.
